"I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERY CHILD COUNTS"

My priorities as your School Board Member are to:

    1.       Attract and retain highly-qualified teachers and non-instructional staff by:

            . Supporting a multi-year contract with structured pay increases without raising taxes

            . Providing an equitable health-care insurance package for all school board employees

    2.    Encourage curriculum changes to promote student excellence by:

                   . Restructuring ESE Program accountability 

                   . Increasing classroom books and supplies

                    . Instituting small, well-disciplined classrooms with certified in-field teachers

                    . Reintroducing a Pre K-12 curriculum

                    . Developing a Pre K-3 reading program

    3.    Provide fiscal responsibility and accountability to parents and taxpayers by:

                    . Formulating a restructured transparent budget 

                    . Reviewing expenses to ensure fiscal accountability

                    . Empowering SAC parents 

                    . Conducting town-hall meetings

                    . Maintaining a responsible construction budget

    4.    Promote more administrative respect and support of school employees by:

                   . Providing district-wide in-service training 

                    . Promoting professional development.

                    . Visiting a different school each month 

                    . Implementing a nurse in every school program

I am involved with numerous educational organizations, including: Founder and Board Member of the Big Pine Neighbor- hood Charter School; Board of Director for the Florida Association of Charter Schools; Member of Florida Consortium of Charter Schools, Advisory Board Member of School Choice Florida Resource Center at Nova SE University; Co-Founder of the Educational Coalition for Monroe County, Mentor in the Take Stock for Children Program (Sugarloaf Middle School); Sponsor for Adopt-A-Classroom (Key West High School), and Volunteer for Challenge Day (Coral Shores and Key West High Schools).

I am actively involved with numerous community organizations and activities, including: Being a Member of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of the Keys area Board of Directors; Member of the Boy Scouts of America Buccaneer District Advisory Board, an "Unsung Hero" for youth advocacy awarded by the Community Foundation & the Big Pine and Lower Keys Rotary Club, A Board member of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, and a Member of the Older American Advisory Board for the BOCC. In the past I have been a: Founding Member of Jacobs Aquatic Center, Former substitute teacher in both the Monroe and Miami-Dade School Systems, Member of the UTD Teacher’s union, Member and Chairman of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, and a columnist on parent/school concerns in the News-Barometer weekly column, "Charter Chatter" and the Free Press monthly column, "Schools Can Work", as well as other community organizations.

I am a retired professor from Union Institute & University, with a Ph.D. in Education and a MA in Anthropology; and a best-seller author of the book, "Treasure of the Atocha".

As your School Board Candidate, I bring leadership and integrity to the Board,

and I am an advocate for children, parents and teachers to seek solutions

for educational issues to promote excellence in our schools.
